Is Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce a Worthy Watch?

Hollywood has capitalized on divorce for years, and why not? It’s an emotionally charged topic that pulls in a specific target audience. But real-life angst is quite different. Your Michigan divorce lawyer knows this is an uneasy decision rife with personal insecurity and flip-flopping emotions. Separation predates divorce for many couples. It acts as a temporary patch, allowing both ends to sort out their individual lives while preparing their support systems and testing the waters of single-hood once more. Bravo’s new lineup includes one of the most controversial shows currently on the air: The Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce.

What Is the Premise of The Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce?

Just like most of the shows and movies today, The Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce is adapted from a book series. In this case, the adaptation arises from Girlfriends' Guides by Vicki Iovine. Bravo’s first season of the 13-episode dramatic comedy chronicles the life of a writer going through the divorce process. Abby McCarthy is a self-help novelist who happens to be separated from her husband. But instead of coming clean to family and the public, she and her husband agree to hide their separation instead.

As the series progresses, Abby ends up talking and confiding more in her divorced friends than her married ones. She, in turn, takes their advice, which leads to exploration on a deeply personal and sexual level. At the same time, her husband explores his new single side. And when they return to play house, trouble arises in the form of emotional entanglement, jealousy, and discovery of the truth by the ones their trying so hard to protect – their kids.

Is This Just a Fun Watch, Or Does This Hit Too Close to Home?

The answer to that really depends on the person watching the show. While there are some major parallels to real life issues, there’s a stronger connection to the need for dramatic entertainment. A competent Michigan divorce attorney will insist on your working to get emotional, financial, and personal issues in order before separating. Separation is a time to find yourself, to prepare and accept your support system, and to test those waters of single-hood once more. But it is a legal time as well. True separation is mandated by the court and requires the couple to live in completely separate households; hence the word “separation”.

During a legal separation, children are a priority. The Bravo show highlights the consequences of keeping children in the dark by lying to them. Your kids are among the smartest people you’ll ever know, especially when it comes to sensing trouble between their parents. They've likely already talked to their closest friends, and maybe a teacher or counselor at school. You may be the last person they choose to talk to because they don’t want to cause you more pain when you realize that they’re hurting as well.

So in this aspect, The Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce is more than good fun to emotionally fused divorcees. But the important thing to remember with any show is that it’s entertainment, not legal advice. What the show can do is make you think and perhaps motivate you to improve your own situation. Not a bad trade for losing yourself in an hour-long program.

Don't turn to The Girlfriends' Guide for legal direction. Contact your Michigan divorce attorney instead.
